NEWBERN — Dyer County Girls Soccer showed plenty of fight Tuesday night, rallying from an early three-goal deficit to defeat Mayfield, Kentucky, 8-7 in a wild back-and-forth match at home. The Choctaws found themselves in an early hole as Mayfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes. Dyer County began chipping away at the deficit with its first goal, but the Cardinals answered to extend their advantage to 4-1. From there, the momentum shifted dramatically. Dyer County closed the first half with three unanswered goals, erasing the deficit and sending the teams into halftime tied at 4-4. Mayfield regained control early in the second half, scoring twice to build a 6-4 advantage, but once again the Choctaws had an answer. Dyer County scored two straight to pull even at 6-6 with approximately 24 minutes remaining. After spending much of the night playing from behind, the Choctaws finally broke through for their first lead of the match at 7-6. Dyer County wasn't finished, adding another goal to extend the advantage to 8-6. Mayfield made one final push, scoring with 1:39 remaining to cut the lead to 8-7. The Choctaws held off the Cardinals over the final seconds to complete the comeback and secure the one-goal victory. Alayna Leedy powered the Dyer County attack with five goals, while Ava Pearson scored twice and Addisyn Trout added a goal to account for the Choctaws' eight scores. Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Greer was busy throughout the high-scoring contest and finished with 20 saves, helping Dyer County withstand Mayfield's offensive pressure and preserve the victory down the stretch. The win continues a strong offensive stretch for the Choctaws. Leedy had previously scored twice in Dyer County's season-opening win over Peabody, while Pearson recorded a hat trick in the Choctaws' 9-0 victory over Covington. Dyer County will now turn its attention back to district competition. The Choctaws will host district foe Dyersburg on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Newbern.
